Sara and Andy Justice tried to get pregnant for years, but after a lot of attempts and seeing a doctor, they decided to go for option ‘C’. They chose to stop trying and fulfill their desire to have children through adoption. The process was quite an ordeal, but once they were selected to adopt a child, their long-cherished wish seemed to come true. Unfortunately, something terrible happened when the pregnant biological mother chose them as adoptive parents…
Happily Married, but Missing Something
Sarah and Andy Justice from Tulsa, Oklahoma (United States) had been happily married for 3 years when they felt they missed something in their lives. Both knew immediately knew what that feeling was; a wish to have children. They wanted to start trying to get their own family. This is a fairly logical step for a happily married couple who would like to share and expand their love. Unfortunately, for the Justices, this turned out not to be as self-evident as most people think it is.
Sarah Struggled With Getting Pregnant
Unfortunately, Sarah Justice turned out to be one of the, sadly many, women who had difficulties getting pregnant. For 3 years they tried to get pregnant the natural way, without any success. This put a strain on Andy and Sarah’s marriage because they both wanted to become mom & dad, so badly. After years of trying, they decided to try it in a different manner: the needed professional medical help, so that what they did…
Willing to Make Sacrifices
Once Sarah and David decided to seek medical help for Sarah’s ‘infertility issues’, they did some extensive research and found out there was a problem. There were no gynaecologists and/or fertility doctors near Tulsa. So, they had to move to another place. That other place was St. Louis in Missouri. Both didn’t really want to move, but both were willing to make the sacrifice. In 2014 they drove from Tulsa to St. Louis. Once they got to their destination, Sarah got her first fertility treatment.
The Treatment Wouldn’t Make Any Difference
Unfortunately, the Justices got disappointing news: the fertility treatment wouldn’t make any difference. They were heartbroken. Determined to start their own family, they knew they couldn’t give up. They kept searching for other medical possibilities. This was when Sarah and Andy asked the doctor about in-vitro fertilization, also known as IVF. It turned out that Sarah was eligible for IVF, but that the chance of a pregnancy would be about 10% and Sarah had to undergo an uncomfortable treatment.
You Can Only Hope It Succeeded
The IVF process consists of months of hormone treatments before the actual procedure is done and after that, you can only hope that it has succeeded. If you thought that wasn’t bad enough: well, there’s more. One IVF attempt costs between $12,000 and $15,000 dollars. The Justices would have to pay about $60,000 – for multiple attempts, in case it didn’t work the first time – with a big risk that at the end of the treatments they still hadn’t succeeded. Andy and Sarah thought the risk was too big, so they decided to go for plan C.
It Could Take Years Before Adopting a Newborn
The Justices decided to try to adopt a child, which turned out to be a slow traject. Before the couple could adopt a baby, they had to follow several lengthy application procedures that would take its toll on their personal lives and living situation. It turned out that adopting a child could take years, especially if they wanted to adopt a newborn baby. Because most people who want to become adoptive parents want to adopt a newborn. However, the couple was so determined that all this couldn’t stop them…
Time for Some Interviews
The adoption process was tedious and difficult. Their house had to be checked to see if it met the requirements for ‘raising a child’. In the meantime, the couple underwent various interviews with adoption agencies. The couple had already gone through a lot so they knew that they would endure this too. Once they finished the entire process, the adoption agency arranged for them to have interviews with pregnant women who were giving up their child for adoption. Finally, you would think, but this too turned out to be a tough struggle…
Their Prayers Had Been Answered
The Justices already had a number of interviews with pregnant women, who wanted to give up their baby for adoption when they finally received good news. One of the mothers had chosen them as adoptive parents. Sarah and Andy were ecstatic. Finally, their prayers had been answered, and it seemed that they were finally going to expand their family. They supported the mother at every step of the way and were almost ready for the baby when they received bad news.
Next Time It Had to Come True
The pregnant woman cancelled the adoption at the last minute and the Justices were, yet again, disappointed. They did not give up: once again the couple contacted several agencies and informed them they wanted to try again. After doing several interviews the waiting process started all over again. But this time Sarah and Andy were determined that one of the biological moms would choose them, as the future parents for her child. It just had to be!
Slowly Losing Hope
Round two seemed to go well until, again, the biological mother withdrew from the process. For Andy and Sarah it felt like: “Every time things seemed to go well and we took three steps forward, we were put 4 steps back.” Again, they did not want to give up, and they carried on for round 3. The third time’s the charm, right? What they didn’t know is that their prayers were finally going to be answered. Shortly after the second biological mother withdrew, the couple finally got that all-important phone call…
The Long-awaited Phone Call
The couple slowly began to lose hope, but out of nowhere, Sarah received a phone call from the adoption agency that gave her new hope. “There is a third biological mother who has chosen you.” This was fantastic news for Andy and his wife and they couldn’t be happier. Was it finally happening? Homever the biggest shock for the couple – and the biological mother – still had to come. I bet neither one of them saw this coming…
They Didn’t Have to Think Long
The Justices couldn’t believe that another mother had chosen them. The biological mother even asked if they wanted to come along to the first ultrasound. They were so enthusiastic and happy that they didn’t have to think long for an answer. At the ultrasound, Sarah and Andy could see their child for the first time, but to everyone’s surprise, it turned out to be not one, not two, but three babies. What a surprise, right!
Andy and Sarah couldn’t believe their ears and eyes, when they heard (and saw), not one, not two, but THREE heartbeats. They had fought so long to become parents, and now the universe rewarded them. They did not hesitate for a second: all three babies were welcome of course. They immediately started preparing for this beautiful expansion of the Justice family, even though they had to wait for a few more months. No one could be more enthusiastic than the Justices were at that time.
Time to Make Some Huge Changes
All though they didn’t hesitate for a second and agreed in adopting all three babies. The couple became quite stressed before they received their babies. Did they make the right choice? And how were they going to do this? Even though they had been busy trying to have children for so long, they weren’t really prepared to have three children at once. They didn’t even have one nursery, let alone three. They realized they would have to make some huge changes as soon as possible…
When the Time Came, They Were Totally Ready
As always Sarah and Andy tried to see the best in the situation. They realized they would eventually want multiple children, so this did save them from going through the intense adoption process all over again. The couple felt super blessed that they got three children at once. The soon-to-become-parents soon started preparing for their new children. They had to make their house baby-proof, they had to buy strollers, and of course, they had to mentally prepare themselves for having three babies. When the time came, they were totally ready. At least, that’s what they thought…
Say Hello to Hannah, Elizabeth, and Joel Justice
In May 2013, 8 weeks early, the biological mother’s water broke and it was time to deliver the triplets. After years of waiting it was finally happening: Sarah and Andy would become parents. They had to wait for hours, but after a difficult delivery, their 3 miracles were really there. Hannah, Elizabeth, and Joel were each about 1500 grams of pure joy for Sarah and her husband, but they were not yet allowed to take their miracles home. They had to remain in the hospital for observation. The new parents waited patiently, but in the meantime, something happened to Sarah…
Did the Long Process Take Its Toll?
Sarah suddenly became ill about one week after the birth of Hannah, Elizabeth, and Joel. At first, it seemed to be nothing serious, but her symptoms didn’t seem to go away. Did the long process of becoming a parent take its toll or was it something else? Andy worried about his wife and decided she needed to make a doctor’s appointment. After a number of examinations, the doctor returned with some very special and unexpected news…
The doctor had done several tests and could not find any illnesses. So what was going on with her? When the doctor checked her bloodwork, he found the answer: Sarah suffered from pregnancy symptoms. Yes, you read that right: Sarah was pregnant. After years of trying and unsuccessful hormone treatments, Sarah was pregnant, after all. Both Sarah and Andy couldn’t believe the news. When she went to see the gynaecologist, to do an ultrasound, she got the biggest shock…
Not One, But Two Babies
The gynaecologist told the couple that they were expecting not one, but TWO babies. After years of disappointment and stress, the Justices became parents of no less than 5 children, within 1 year. Luckily, the Justices saw the humour in the situation. Even though it was going to be a time of working hard, they felt even more blessed than before. They were overwhelmed but also overjoyed, and started preparing themselves for yet two more babies. While they did, their three other little babies slowly got strong enough to leave the hospital.
As Sarah’s Belly Grew…
While the couple prepared themselves for not three, but five babies, they could finally take their beautiful triplets home. It was time to get used to being a family of five. As Sarah’s belly grew, it became harder and harder to hold and take care of the babies. Besides that, she still felt sick and very tired, but luckily she had her Andy and lots of family members to help them. This way, the family managed to take care of their beautiful triplets, while waiting for their twins.
If They Could Handle Triplets, They Could Also Handle Twins
A few months before the triplets turned 1 year old, Sarah gave birth to the beautiful twins: Andrew and Abigail. While they had just gotten used to being parents, she went into labour. After a long and hard pregnancy, their two biological twins finally joined their not-so-little family. For the parents, it felt like it wasn’t going to be a big adjustment, because they had already had months of practice with Hannah, Joel, and Elizabeth. If they could handle triplets, they could also handle twins, right?
The First Year Was Harder Than Expected
The first year was very difficult for Sarah and Andy, but they never complained about it. They were extremely happy with all of their children, and they got lots of help from their loved ones, like family and friends. When the couple had to go to work, family and friends stepped up to babysit so the family could still make enough money to take care of their babies. Then, a great community decided to help the couple out…
Donations From Heaven
It was clear for everyone that it was not easy to earn enough money to take care of all of the seven family members. Having one baby is for most people (to) expensive, let alone 3 or even 5 babies. That is why their church stepped up and decided to donate food and baby formula, and even cook many meals for the family. This way, the parents could focus on their babies, because taking care of them was truly a full-time job. Luckily, even more, people decided to help them.
84 Bottles & 300 Diapers a Week
Shortly after Sarah and Andy became the parents of five babies within nine months, their story went viral. Soon, many people started helping out the family. People sent them many things like diapers, clothes, baby wipes, bottles, and even money was donated. They definitely needed it, because they used up to 84 bottles and 300 diapers a week. That’s so insane! Slowly, the family grew into a daily routine, and their babies grew bigger and became toddlers.
And Then This Happened…
You would think that one set of twins and one set of triplets would be enough for Sarah and Andy, but in 2015 the Justices announced some unexpecting news to the rest of the world. Once again Sarah was expecting another baby. About nine months later (January 2016), Hannah, Elizabeth, Joel, Andrew, Abigail, and the rest of the world were introduced to the sixth Justice sibling named Caleb Justice. That is wonderful news, don’t you think?
How Do They Do It?
You might wonder how the family does it, but they just have just one secret: crazy organisation. According to Sarah, it is super important for them to plan everything, otherwise, things would become very messy. Every day, they have the same kind of schedule. They start their days with, breakfast, changing diapers, a little morning walk, naps and then they usually have playdates with friends or family. Then, it is time for more serious business..

Who Would Have Expected That They Eventually Have 6 Children
Now in 2021, Hannah, Joel, Elizabeth, Abigail, and Andrew are 8 years old and Caleb is 5 years old. Sarah and Andy are very happy and feel incredibly blessed with their 6 beautiful children. “They bring so much joy and love into our lives. We can’t wish for anything else in life!” Although they had several setbacks in their way to become parents, they got super blessed with so many kids. I bet they never saw that coming when they first started this process.
