Just a normal day
Before the sisters started their own office, the sisters did not work together. However, when they discovered that they were a great team, the situation changed. Carla and Gladys learned how the business works after being in it for several years. For Gladys and Carla Spizzirri, their day at the office started quite quietly. They are no longer so surprised by the houses, but there are still exceptions. This house was one of them.
This changed their lives
From time to time, professional real estate agents are still surprised! The Spizzirri sisters didn’t know they were on to something big, but it’s understandable because nobody knows what the future holds, right? The phone from the estate agent’s office started ringing, and the call changed Carla and Gladys’ lives forever.
A call from a stranger
As the brokerage office phone does not stop ringing, the call was answered like any other call. An old lady named Joyce called because she was thinking of selling her house. However, she had not yet made a final decision. The real estate agent did not know at the time that she would reveal a big secret about her house that everyone had been waiting for years.
The secret will change everything
Joyce seemed hesitant as she told the real estate agents about her plans to sell her home. From the tone of the older woman’s voice and the way she spoke, they could tell she didn’t like the idea very much. However, she was clearly a persistent person and would probably sell her house. So Joyce revealed a secret to the real estate duo that was completely unexpected and changed the situation for both of them.
Why is Joyce so mysterious about her house?
Many people who sell their house see it as the right move for them. Joyce, on the other hand, did not seem happy or excited about leaving her home. For some reason, real estate agents often have a sixth sense when talking to clients. Both Gladys and Carla suspected that Joyce had a big secret. What could be the reason why Joyce was so mysterious about her house?
The secret was much bigger than they thought
Joyce did not try to hide a typical problem of the owners. The boiler had no defects and there were no problems such as black mould. The secret was much bigger. The real estate duo Carla and Gladys had already been through a lot because of their many years of experience. But what they now saw they didn’t expect…
The sisters of the real estate company
Carla and Gladys thought that since they had been in the real estate sector for some time, they had seen it all. The couple had managed to deal with things that ordinary people would give up, and the sisters believed that they were capable of dealing with anything. Before arriving at Joyce’s house, the real estate duo was already thinking about the things they could find there. Although they came up with some crazy ideas, the reality was nothing like what they had imagined.
She has already been living here for 70 years
Joyce told Carla and Gladys that she had been living in her simple house for over 70 years. In that time, she had never worked in it except to improve the kitchen. When the couple heard this, they began to fear her visit to the house. If he was careless, the house was probably in bad shape.
The value of the house
148 Jane Street is located in the Old Mill area of the city, a place considered ideal by many Torontonians. The Spizzirri sisters have sold properties in the area and the houses have reached impressive prices. However, Carla and Gladys did not know at the time exactly how much they could sell Joyce’s house for. After doing the calculations, the estimated value of the house they got was $968,000. Until they saw the inside…
The way Joyce spoke made Carla and Gladys pause. They wondered if the older woman was upset that she had left home for over 70 years or if there was something she hadn’t told them. If you are attached to a place you have, it is natural to feel bad when you leave it. However, if Joyce kept something from them, the estate agents would have a problem…
Joyce finally made a decision. She was going to put her house up for sale. Carla and Gladys only had to see the house itself. The day came when the estate agents carried out their inspection. They arrived at 148 Jane Street and were greeted by the old lady at the front door. As soon as they entered the door, the sisters were surprised by what they saw. They had no idea that something totally unexpected was waiting for them in the building. They were both surprised when they saw what Joyce’s big secret was. They were not prepared for it either. Once inside, the couple could only look on in amazement – it was a house with a beautiful interior that hadn’t been touched in 70 years!
The sisters did not expect to see this, but it was a big surprise. The woman had done nothing to her house in all those years and was still in beautiful condition. See here the beautiful dining room. The sisters looked at each room in amazement. Read on to see all the beautiful and amazing pictures.
A traditional woman
In fact, Joyce looked after her home like any other traditional woman. The house was simply stunning on the inside. For Carla and Gladys, it was amazing to see how much care had been taken in maintaining the house, which was basically perfect. The decoration, the furniture, and also the trinkets were all great. The house was bright and impeccably clean.
The condition of the house is excellent
The couple of real estate agents were surprised to see the excellent condition of the house. Carla and Gladys felt as if they had won the lottery. Although this was completely unexpected, they knew that the property could fetch a higher price – more than their initial estimate – as the house was in incredible condition.
The designer herself
Besides, the house was like a big time capsule. Entering it made you feel as if you were travelling back to the 1940s. Joyce actually moved to 148 Jane Street at that time. She decorated her house to her liking – the floor, the wallpaper, the curtains, the furniture, and more were all chosen by Joyce herself. How cool!
As Carla and Gladys toured the house, the couple were delighted that the rooms were very clean and attractive. In their years in real estate, the ladies had not found a cleaner or better maintained house. They could see that a lot of effort had been made to take care of the beautiful house, the duo understood why the older woman was hesitant. Inside, Joyce’s house was in excellent condition, but there was something about it that could be an obstacle.
A big problem
The real estate duo cared that the house was decorated in a feminine way wherever it was looked at. The house was amazing and well maintained, but it might not attract male buyers as many men might find the decor too floral or too pink. The gilt, purple and pink of the rooms probably would not attract many male customers and even some women. It takes a lot of money, time and effort to redecorate an entire house.
A very unique room
The most unique part of the house was the basement, which was an acquired taste. It was the cave of the perfect man, with wooden panels. There was also a bar. It was obvious that a man spent some time there, probably Joyce’s husband. The room was certainly a haven for the flowers and cakes in the house.
However, the garden was a setback
The house was beautiful, but unfortunately the backyard was not. It certainly seemed the only oversight. Despite the mediocre backyard, the real estate agents knew that the house could get a good price. Carla and Gladys had several inspectors come to the house to check for damage and hidden defects before they started selling it.
Sometimes a house may seem incredible but it has serious hidden problems, such as foundation problems or moldy walls. Things like these usually mean a big drop in price, but Gladys and Carla thought the house was perfectly fine. Despite how confident they were, something unexpected might turn up. There was another big surprise when the inspectors arrived at 148 Jane Street.
Surprising results from the inspectors
As soon as they arrived at the house, the house inspectors began their work. Since they searched every part of the house, it took them a while to finish checking everything. Their discovery surprised everyone, the house was in perfect shape. It could be offered to potential buyers as is! Gladys and Carla had never experienced anything like this before!
Something happened that they never expected
When the real estate agents returned to the office, they began selling Joyce’s house for $699,000. They knew this was expensive, but something exciting happened. There was a bidding war that started between the potential buyers. They saw how beautiful the house was. The property was definitely a great choice for those who wanted to have a home in the neighborhood.
The house became very popular
The impressive house with stunning interiors went viral and the media began to pick up on the story. As the house became more and more popular, its price also skyrocketed.
Most of the house remained the same, except for the kitchen. In the 1960s, Joyce had modern conveniences installed because she wanted more efficiency in the kitchen. The upgrade may have been done in the 1960s, but the appliances were still working well. This is to be expected because Joyce took good care of her home and was a time capsule in the house.
Where she went
It was time for Joyce to let go of the masterpiece she did so well and cared for for decades. She was actually a seamstress in the past and has no professional training in interior design. “I’ve always tried to be individual and follow my own styles,” Joyce explained. The old lady sold her house because she wanted to live in a nursing home.
A history lesson
Joyce and her husband moved into their home in 1942, during World War II. Many people were curious to know if the new owners of 148 Jane Street were planning a makeover. To this day, we still don’t know what the new owners did, but it’s not a heritage site or a museum, so they are free to do whatever they want. We just hope they do the right thing.
There was a trap when buying the house
The problem was that the sale did not include the furniture. The furniture certainly played an important role in the design and feel of the house, so we hope the buyers read the fine print. Joyce’s daughter wanted the furniture, so she inherited it.
After seven decades
Joyce started living at home at the age of 24 and in the seven decades she lived there, she never neglected the house. In her later years, she spent a lot of time in the master bedroom, but it still looks immaculate. The bed and chairs looked absolutely new. They didn’t look like they were from the 1940s.
Joyce explained to the media that her personal design style was all about tone on tone pieces, matching designs and soft colours. Thanks to her talent and skill, she made her home welcoming and comfortable.
The details of the house
There are two bathrooms in the three-bedroom house, which had post-war wallpaper, wall-to-wall carpets, metallic wallpaper, gold accents, floral sweeps and a baroque pattern. In addition, the house comes with fireplaces, which are essential to combat Toronto’s cold weather. The hardware and cabinets were customised and made to order. The choice of colours was masterful, with each room having a colour scheme chosen after much consideration.
The best part
The main floors are impressive, but our favourite is surely the basement. There were wooden cupboards and washing machines in the laundry. They looked amazing next to each other.
Follow in their footsteps
Joyce enjoyed decorating her house and taking care of it. She managed to keep her home at a level that few people can reach.
