Cauliflower is a super healthy vegetable, but unfortunately not everyone likes it. But did you know that there are some amazing secrets about cauliflower that will surprise you?
Secret 1: Cauliflower Is Great for Your Immune System
When you think of vitamins that increase your resistance, it is of course vitamin C, and we often think of oranges. But did you know that cauliflower also has a very big influence on this? If you eat a portion of cauliflower of 100 grams, you are already close to the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. Cauliflower also contains vitamin K, magnesium, potassium, vitamin B6 and calcium. It is also a huge fibre bomb! Fibre is not only important for a healthy digestion but it also gives you a longer feeling of satiety.
Secret 2: The Leaves of the Cauliflower
Did you know that you can even eat the leaves of a cauliflower? In fact, the leaves contain more calcium than the cauliflower itself. Calcium is extremely important for healthy bones and muscles. Do you want to eat the leaves for better health? Then don’t throw them away but use them in a soup, wok dish or stew! What is really great is to roast them in the oven. To give them extra flavour, marinate them with olive oil, dill and garlic and you have a delicious snack! Crispy and yet super healthy.
Secret 3: You Can Buy Cauliflower in All Sorts of Colours
To my surprise, I found out that cauliflower is not just white. Cauliflower is white in colour because the flower buds are covered by the cauliflower leaves during the growth phase. Because of this, they don’t get the chance to get a colour. When the cauliflowers are more exposed to sunlight, they will discolor. The cauliflower can then become green, purple or orange. Besides the colour, there are little differences in taste and nutritional values. Unfortunately, the cabbages do lose some of their colour by cooking them.
Secret 4: You Can Keep Cauliflower for a Long Time
Cauliflower is almost the only vegetable that can be kept for a long time. You can even eat one cauliflower several times. If you store cauliflower in the vegetable compartment of your fridge, you can keep it for up to 10 days.
