This Particular Dog Needed Her Help More Than Anybody Had Guessed

Chris and Mariesa were exploring their options for adopting a dog, so they visited a number of animal shelters to look for a suitable addition to their family. Mariesa promised to only pick out one, but it proved harder to stick to that promise when she was faced with so many adorable dogs. Who would Mariesa choose? All the dog looked to this potential dog mother with adoring “puppy eyes”, telling her how much they wanted to be adopted. Nevertheless, Mariesa was able to find the right one when her gaze fell on this particular dog who needed her help more than anybody had guessed.

Would They Make the Right Choice?

Pregnant Pitbull Needs Loving Home

The dog that approached them and started to lick their hands was a heavily pregnant pit bull. Mariesa hated the fact that a pregnant dog was in the shelter and immediately knew that this dog deserved to go to a suitable home, like hers and Chris. The dog deserved to give birth to her pups in a loving place, so there was no doubt about it for Mariesa: this dog was coming home with them. However, they soon learned something that made them wonder if they had made the right choice.

A Rough Start for Storie

A Rough Start for Storie

Mariesa felt like crying for this poor dog, who she learned was called Storie. The pitbull first belonged to an individual who had a dog breeding business in his backyard. Who would have thought this pregnant pit bull couldn’t have had an even sadder history, you’re wrong. When her owner realized how expensive and difficult it was to care for Storie and her puppies, she was taken to a shelter instead. Poor thing! Luckily Mariesa’s big heart thought otherwise and decided to take her home…

Showered With Love & Affection

Chris and Mariesa wanted to sort out the dog’s situation and shower Storie with love and affection and provide her with the shelter she really deserved as a pregnant dog. It was difficult enough to carry puppies and to give birth to them; an animal shelter was no place for a pregnant dog, let alone giving birth there! However, it became even more complicated when they went to the vet for a check-up and an ultrasound…

Big-Hearted PitBull Fans

Coincidentally, lovebirds Mariesa and Chris are huge fans of this specific breed. In fact, Chris and Mariesa already adopted a number of pit bulls from other animal shelters, but their love extent also to other dog breeds. The love for their dogs is so big that they’re allowed to sleep in the bed. Chris: “At night, all dogs want to sleep in bed with us and it can get too crowded at times. This resulted in us being pushed out of bed or having to spend the night sleeping on the couch. So, we built a ‘mega bed’.”

New Situation for Experienced Dog Parents

As you can see, both Chris and Mariesa really love dogs and to be even more specific the pit bulls breed. The couple already had 10 dogs at home, when they met Storie. With all this experience as dog parents, the situation of Storie was something they had never dealt with before. Still, they decided that Storie deserved a chance and needed a warm, safe, peaceful and loving home to deliver her pups, but nobody expected this to happen.

Their Shared Passion Grew Overtime

The couple shared one passion in particular: their love of animals! In an interview, Mariesa even went as far as to say that she had broken up with men in the past because they did not understand her obsession with dogs. Many of her former partners did not support her vision of filling a house with puppies. You could say that it was a good thing that she found a fellow dog lover in Chris. Apart from their love for each other, they also shared a mutual love for dogs. This passion only grew when they spent more time together and kept adopting dogs, but Storie was a whole new story…

Common “Problem” in Animal Shelters

Common “Problem” in Animal Shelters

Unfortunately, many animal shelters face problems for which they do not have the resources. Which makes it almost impossible to take care of all the animals they want to rescue and are being dropped off, let alone that they’re pregnant. When Chris and Mariesa visited the animal shelters, they noticed that there was a certain breed of dog that was overwhelmingly common: pit bulls. They could hardly believe that these friendly dogs had not yet found their own loving home. The lovebirds did not know it then, but one of these four-legged beauties would change their lives…

Bad Reputation = Big Misunderstanding

Having Pit Bulls As Pets is Illegal

Pit bulls have gained a bad reputation, which is no more than a big misunderstanding. The reason is that this dog breed is characterized by their large head and muscular build, but this does not mean that they pose a supposed risk. Regardless of this fact, many states and countries consider having a pit bull as a pet to be illegal, which is why many animal shelters have pit bulls in their care. Something Mariesa and Chris thought was absolutely not fair.

Chris and Mariesa were both aware of the fact that animal shelters were crammed with pit bulls, so they brought as many pit bulls home as possible – as far as their financial means allowed of course. Although pit bulls are believed to be one of the most dangerous dog breeds in the country, there has been no research that has supported this claim. Of course, a dog may misbehave if it is treated badly, but this does not mean that it is in its nature to behave this way. These dogs are really great creatures if you give them a chance. Storie Needed Help As Soon As Possible

This animal-loving couple knew right away that this entailed trouble for the poor pit bull. She obviously needed help as soon as possible. They had to make a decision on the spot as this could mean the difference between life and death for the dog and her unborn puppies. Storie needed immediate care, but the couple felt like they needed more time to think about it. As they were talking, Storie laid her beautiful head on her future owner’s knee and begged with her eyes. Mariesa had to make a decision.

After all, this would mean that the big family would not just expand with one dog, but with way more family members. This was going to be a big challenge and adjustment, that was for sure. However, they would soon learn that it was more complex than it had seemed at first. Although they were aware that keeping Storie meant that they had to take care of another 7 dogs, they did not want to keep the pregnant dog in the shelter any longer than necessary…

Mariesa wanted to help Storie by giving her a safe place to deliver her puppies. The couple began to debate the decision and weighed up the pros and cons of taking Storie home. There was no doubt about the fact that it was not a practical idea. However, Chris suggested something that would be very useful for the situation to come. It certainly appeared to be their best bet, both for their family, for Storie and her puppies.

He suggested that they would act as a foster home for Storie and her puppies. This would only be temporary as the shelter team would look for permanent homes for Storie and her pups. They couldn’t afford to keep more pets along with their 10 other dogs. The suggestion was brilliant, but it would not solve all of the problems. Why had Storie not given birth yet, even though she was over her due date? Mariesa and Chris thought they needed to give the pregnancy the attention it deserved. Was Storie Unable to Give Birth?

There had to be a reason Storie was unable or unwilling to give birth to the pups. As with most internet searches, there was not much reassurance to be found online. In fact, the loving couple became even more worried about why Storie hadn’t given birth yet, so they made an important decision.

There Was a Chance She Would Lose Her Beautiful Puppies

People tend to underestimate how intelligent most animals actually are. When Mariesa and Chris started looking for answers, they found out why a dog might be obstructing the delivery of her puppies. They even found a source that seemed to perfectly describe what was going on. Research has shown that animals often experience a lot of stress and even trauma when they reside in shelters. Pregnant dogs are naturally more susceptible to this. Although shelters strive to help animals in need, they quickly fill up. A loving home, such as that of Chris and Mariesa, can make a lot of difference. Still, there was a chance she would lose her beautiful puppies.

Chris and Mariesa started to read up on the matter and realized that things could escalate quickly. If Storie would obstruct the pregnancy any longer it was very possible that she would lose her puppies. Not only that, but her own life could also be in danger. Mariesa discovered that if pregnant dogs suffering from trauma are concerned about their puppies that they can choose to completely refuse the delivery. Chris and Mariesa could sense that this was a precarious situation. They had to get Storie to the vet as soon as possible…

Six dogs sounded as more than enough, but twelve? It was clear that the problem was more serious than they had originally thought.

At the very least, the ultrasound showed that all puppies were doing well. The vet told them it was best to go home and prepare for the birth. If Storie still had not given birth within 48 hours, they had to come back for another examination (and maybe even a c-section). Chris and Mariesa did not know it at the time, but Storie actually had a great reason for waiting.

You can probably imagine how stressed Chris and Mariesa were at the time. Storie was in danger of losing twelve pups. Everybody could see that it was both a dangerous and tragic situation. However, it seemed that there was nothing they could do for Storie. The only thing left to do was to make sure she was comfortable. When they went home, Mariesa proposed a clever plan.

It is incredible that Storie only had to spend less than 24 hours with Chris and Mariesa to feel comfortable with them. She felt so at home, that she even gave birth to her entire nest of pups. Although Storie’s story has a happy ending, there are so many dogs that will never find a permanent home. Animal shelters usually need a lot of help to take good care of animals. Unfortunately, Storie’s story is not unique. Only in the United States are dogs in any condition brought to the animal shelter every day. Another heartbreaking story is that of the heavily pregnant Frannie, who was taken to the shelter just before her due date and was put on the euthanasia list…

Heavily Pregnant Frannie Was Put on the Euthanasia List

When Franny was taken to the Harris County Animal Shelter, which is one of the largest and busiest shelters in Houston, Texas. she was heavily pregnant. Unfortunately, the shelter has limited space and is often to always full. More and more pets are pouring into shelters every day for various reasons. Animal shelters have limited resources and if they are really overcrowded, it may be that even healthy, sweet, adoptable pets are finally on the euthanasia list. This is what happened to Frannie.

Eventually, Frannie was adopted first, but soon there were also many people interested in the puppies and they also get a ‘forever home’. Happy With Her New Family

Frannie was adopted by Loraine. She was looking for an adult dog fit enough to take her on long hikes. The moment Frannie’s new owner came to visit her, there was an instant click and Frannie showed her best side. Frannie had to stay with Marie for a while, but when Loraine came to get her, it was like coming home for both of them. Today, Frannie is very happy with her new owners, a cat and two dog brothers & sisters. “She has lots of energy and loves to run,” says Loraine. “She’s a character.”
